What's New With Notebooks

Thanks to an ever-shrinking gap between notebook and desktop performance, more people are choosing notebooks. In fact, roughly one-third of home users will be using notebooks by 2007, according to research firm Gartner. And the performance gap is about to shrink even more with the arrival early this year of the second-generation Intel Pentium M notebook processor, code-named Dothan...

...The Intel Pentium M processor will experience a speed increase, for example, and Intel will finally add 802.11a and 802.11g to its wireless offerings under the Centrino brand. More full-featured ultra portable notebooks that weigh less than 3 pounds will debut. And 9.5-mm optical drives will replace 12.7-mm ones, letting notebooks with such drives maintain a thickness of just 1 inch....by Bill Howard, PC Magazine

Fujitsu's Notebook Heavyweight

Desktop replacement notebooks continue to attract buyers, and PC makers are happy to supply them. The latest entry is the 10.3-pound Fujitsu LifeBook N5000. The Comfort Zone

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that each year 1.8 million workers suffer from injuries caused by poor ergonomics. But ergonomics is an evolving study. Products that were highly recommended to ease the pain of RSIs (repetitive stress injuries) only a few years ago look blocky and cumbersome now. Even expert advice changes. Not long ago, consumers were told that keyboard trays were a good way to lower the arms to a more natural position. Now, experts say the entire work surface should be lowered, so that the keyboard and everything else is on the same level. The ideal desk wraps around the user, reducing the need to reach for things. Contrast that with the keyboard tray, which actually pushes people farther from their work surfaces.…

The Civil Workplace

Many companies give lip service to the creation of an ergonomically designed, peaceful workplace. Whether from true concern about their employees' well-being or as a defense against possible legal action, such companies rattle on about preventing repetitive-strain injuries but ignore other aspects of the work environment. Good seating, for example, is important for anyone who spends hours at a keyboard. Yet too many office workers still work in cheap secretarial chairs, then go home wondering why their backs hurt. The icon for better seating is the Herman Miller Aeron chair ($700 street). Big, customizable to individual body sizes, and indecently comfortable, this chair is great for all but the tiniest cubicles....
